Jeffery Lee Johnson Jr., (born April 2, 1990) better known by his stage names Roscoe Dash, is an American hip hop rapper, singer and record producer. He is best known for his debut single 'All the Way Turnt Up', which reached number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100. He is also known for featuring on 'No Hands' by Waka Flocka Flame the same year, and 'Marvin & Chardonnay' by Big Sean in 2011, both reaching 13 and 32 respectively on the Billboard Charts. Roscoe also has numerous accolades as a songwriter, working with some of the industry's top talent.[1]
Career[edit]
2002–09: Beginnings[edit]
Johnson started rapping at the age of 12, after his older brother introduced him to hip-hop.[2] In high school, he and his brother put together a rap group that consisted of four artists who went by the name of Black Out Boiz aka B.O.B., where his original stage name ATL came from. Though the group had been receiving positive feedback, ATL would eventually leave B.O.B. (Black Out Boiz) & get started in his pursuit of a solo career.[3] He continued recording in his basement and making mixtapes , this hard work led to Jeffrey Johnson meeting a sponsor of a local rap group who called themselves Travis Porter.[4] He attended Mill Creek High School.
Johnson knew he had to create a new identity to start his music career.[5] He Googled names of comic book heroes, and came across the name Roscoe Dash. Johnson says, 'I needed something more marketable. I needed something that would catch the ears and eyes of whoever was listening or reading the name Roscoe Dash and make them want to do research on Roscoe Dash.'[6] Roscoe Dash released a song 'All the Way Turnt Up' featuring Travis Porter and they released it on their mixtapeI'm a Differenter 2. Dash was only credited as a featured artist.
According to Porter, this was just a mistake.[7] He then met local entrepreneur LA da Boomman in 2009, who then signed him to his production company, Making Moves Inc. (MMI).[8][9] Dash then later agreed deals with both Music Line Group, after Boomman introduced Dash to the A&R representative Anthony Tate, and the Interscope Records distributed Zone 4 after Tate and Dash spoke with music producer Polow da Don, the label's founder.[8][9]
2010–13: Ready Set Go! and J.U.I.C.E.[edit]
Shortly after, Dash re-recorded 'All the Way Turnt Up' this time featuring fellow Atlanta rapper Soulja Boy Tell 'Em. The song turned into a radio hit, and Dash signed with Interscope Records the following year. Dash then started recording his debut album, Ready Set Go!, but it was leaked and shipped before the official release date. The following year Dash was featured on the chart topping single 'No Hands' by fellow Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame and Washington D.C. rapper Wale, the song itself went 3× Platinum, and earned all three rappers the 'Club Banger of the Year' at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards and a Nomination in 2011 at the ASCAP Music Awards.[10][11]
In 2011, Dash released his first EPJ.U.I.C.E.. Dash also appeared on Big Sean's hit single 'Marvin & Chardonnay'; which the song went on to be certified Gold.[12] In 2012, Dash was featured on the cover of XXL magazine, as part of their annual 'Top 10 Freshmen list', along with these fellow rappers; including Iggy Azalea, Danny Brown, Kid Ink, Future, Hopsin, Macklemore, French Montana, Don Trip and Machine Gun Kelly.[13]
2014–present: Series of mixtapes[edit]
On August 29, 2014 Dash released his mixtape entitled The Appetizer.[14][15][16] In June 2015, Dash released the track called 'Catch A Body', which is currently off of his upcoming album Dash Effect 2, under new booking management and is seeking a major comeback after his last few years of silence. In March 2016, Dash released a new mixtape titled 'Glitch'.
Controversy[edit]
Travis Porter[edit]
After Travis Porter heard a song Roscoe had recorded called 'All the Way Turnt Up',[17] the group automatically wanted to be a part of it. Since Travis Porter was already an established local group, he handed the song over to them and was featured on the track. It was featured on Porter's next mixtape, I’m a Differenter 2.[18] The hit became very popular, but most people labeled the song as being Porter's. The song was accredited as Porter featuring YT and ATL. This conflict caused problems between Dash and Travis Porter.
G.O.O.D. Music, Wale, Miguel and Meek Mill[edit]
On September 20, 2012, Dash was confronted by G.O.O.D. Music, Wale, Miguel, and later Meek Mill via Twitter, due to going uncredited for G.O.O.D. Music's Cruel Summer album and Wale's chart topping song 'Lotus Flower Bomb'.[19] Wale responded via Twitter.[20] Dash confronted Miguel, after statements made by him about all the confusion.[21][22] Then later a fellow MMG artist Meek Mill, would poke fun at Dash and Dash would begin confronting him about it.[23]

Ready Set Go! was the intended debut studio album by American hip-hop recording artist Roscoe Dash, released on November 2, 2010 in the United States on MMI, Zone 4, Music Line Group and Interscope Records. The album was recorded in various locations during 2009 and 2010, with production primarily provided by K.E. on the Track and guest performances recorded by Soulja Boy, J. Holiday and Jared Evan. A hip hop album with influences of pop and contemporary R&B, Ready Set Go features hook-driven content sung by Dash's high-pitched, nasal voice.
The album's release was preceded by the release of the singles 'All the Way Turnt Up' and 'Show Out', the latter peaking at number 46 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The album was leaked to retailer Walmart before Dash had finished recording it, leading to the album being initially pulled from all other retailers, although some have since retrospectively made it available. Its premature release has since led Dash to disown the album, as he does not regard it as his definitive debut.
Background and recording[edit]
Roscoe Dash was born Jeffrey Johnson, Jr., and lived in Atlanta with his mother and grandmother. He gained his interest in hip hop from his brother, an aspiring music producer: he began writing lyrics of his own at twelve years old, under the name 'ATL' and joined a four-man group called The Blackout Boys.[1] After releasing mixtapes both with the group and as a solo artist, Dash nearly signed to record label Porter House, the label of Travis Porter – friends of Dash since 2006 – but this fell through after the two fell out following a credits dispute over an early version of Dash's later single 'All the Way Turnt Up'.[1] He then met local entrepreneur LA da Boomman in 2009, who then signed him to his production company, Making Moves Inc. (MMI).[1][3] Dash then later agreed deals with both Music Line Group, after Boomman introduced Dash to the A&R representative Anthony Tate, and the Interscope Records distributed Zone 4 after Tate and Dash spoke with music producer Polow da Don, the label's founder.[1][3]
In an interview with Amazon, Dash explained that he intended to record music for Ready Set Go! that 'everyone can relate to'.[1] as well as to 'be different and bring a new sound'.[1] Production was reported to be provided by K.E. on the Track, Polow da Don and Vybe Beatz.[3][4] Guest appearances are provided by rapper Soulja Boy, who appears on 'All the Way Turnt Up', and singers J. Holiday and Jared Evan, who appear on 'Yes Girl' and 'All I Know' respectively.[2][5] Dash later reported to MTV that he had recorded a song with American singer Chris Brown for Ready Set Go! in Los Angeles, on which the two 'make magic'.[6] However, along with other reported songs such as 'Pop a Bottle' with fellow rapper Young Jeezy and 'Elevator Love' with singer Jazmine, the collaboration does not appear on the final track listing.[2]
Music and lyrics[edit]
Primarily a hip hop album,[1][2]Ready Set Go! also contains influences of pop and contemporary R&B, and consists of themes aimed primarily at a young demographic, including partying and popular product brands.[1][2] Much of the album's production is provided by K.E. on the Track, whose production on the title track draws influences from 'Indian Flute' by Timbaland & Magoo.[2] 'I Be Shopping' contains numerous examples of product placement, backed by a 'memorable melody' which David Jeffries of AllMusic argues broadens the song's 'appeal beyond mall rats'.[2] Dash described 'All the Way Turnt Up' as 'new-age crunk':[7] Soulja Boy, the song's guest, likened it to a stylistically exaggerated version of his own single 'Turn My Swag On'.[8] 'Show Out' contains an infectious chorus and was described by Amazon as a 'flashy, soon-to-be club anthem'.[1] Typically, Dash exhibits a nasal, high-pitched delivery that frequently displays signs of being digitally altered and layered 'as if there were 20 Dashes per track, whining and echoing as far as the ear can hear'.[2]
Release and promotion[edit]
Ready Set Go! was released via MMI, Zone 4, Music Line Group and Interscope Records.[1]MTV originally reported that the album would be released on May 11, 2010,[7] although Billboard later claimed that the album would be released on June 1, 2010.[3] It was then pushed back to November 2, 2010, but the album was leaked to American retailer Walmart prior to its release – it was also unfinished, as Dash intended to add additional material.[9] Although the unfinished album was then officially distributed through Walmart on November 2,[10] the album was not sent to any other retailers on the same date,[9] although it can now be bought via Amazon,[1]eBay and in Denmark and Ireland, via the iTunes Store,[11][12] although not in the United States. Although a release to additional retailers was reported to take place on March 29, 2011, this never materialized.[5] In an interview with Billboard, Dash would remark that he no longer regarded Ready Set Go! as his debut album following its leaking, preferring his debut extended playJ.U.I.C.E. (2011).[9]
Two singles were released to promote Ready Set Go!. Dash originally purchased the production for 'All the Way Turnt Up', the first single, via Vybe Beatz's Soundclick page:[1][3] after Dash had recorded the original version of the song, he played it to hip hop group Travis Porter, who wished to appear on it and duly recorded a new version of the song. However, after Travis Porter incorrectly credited him as a guest on the song instead of the lead when it appeared on Travis Porter's mixtape I'm a Differenter 2 (and subsequently performed it without him on numerous occasions) Dash fell out with the group after their promises to rectify the error did not materialize, and removed them from the song.[1][3] On the advice of L.A. da Boomman, Dash then requested rapper Soulja Boy record a verse from a song, who was so desperate to perform on the song that he protested his case via Twitter to make the appearance.[7] The final version, which features additional production from K.E. On the Track,[2] was released to digital retailers on January 22, 2010,[13] and reached number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 18 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number eight on the Hot Rap Songs chart.[14][15][16] The second single, 'Show Out', was released digitally on April 20, 2010:[17] it did not match the commercial performance of its predecessor, only reaching numbers 41 and 22 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts.[15][16] The music video for 'All the Way Turnt Up' was filmed in an Atlanta warehouse and released via MTV Jams on February 22, 2010,[8] with the video for 'Show Out' featuring shots of Dash among expensive cars and riding a jet-ski.[6]
Although it was not released as a single, 'Sexy Girl Anthem' peaked at number 71 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.[15]
